We've only just finished the season - why are we holding evaluations?
Due to the weather, we are unable to hold evaluations next winter/spring due to the substantial cost the club would incur for indoor time. We cannot do it in the fall due to unpredictable weather and many teams want to play during this period, whether it be with their summer team, or next years team. MYSA and MSHSL policies state we must not hold evaluations during the HS season (typically begins mid-Aug) and we cannot host them until the MYSA State competition is finished (typically end-July). Thus, we have a very tight timeframe in which to operate.
It is important to recognize that the summer season is essentially the "showcase window" to show off your talents from your winter, spring and summer training. It is our chance during evaluations to assess player's technique, skills and development which helps us to place them on appropriate teams.
Who are the evaluators?
The evaluators typically consist of the Director of Coaching, Gavin Pugh, and one of the trainers from the spring/summer training. Where available, the Head Coach from the age group is an evaluator also.
What are the evaluators looking for?
Your child will be assessed on the four components of soccer, as specified by US Youth Soccer (our National Governing Body).
- Technical - how your child plays with the ball at his/her feet
- Tactical - how your child reacts in small, medium and sometimes large sided games
- Physical - speed, agility, and quickness during the activities
- Psychological - perseverance, leadership, positive attitude, sportsmanship, etc.
What is the process?
- Evaluations occur
- If you have been successful, you will receive an email notice/bid from the club specifying which team your child is being offered a place on
- You will have a limited time (usually a few days) to accept/reject the bid.
